The Institute was established in 1954. The Institute conducts research
into the history of Polish and European science and letters, with
special regard to: sources from the European Middle Ages; the conditions
of development and reception of modern science; comparative investigation
into the history of education; environmental factors, and European
relations; Polish scientific elites; the contribution of Polish scientists
to the development of modern science and technology; the reception of
scientific theories in the context of social changes and national movements
in Central and Eastern Europe. Authorized to confer the academic degrees of
doctor and doctor habilitatus of the humanities in history.
The Institute employs 55 scholars.
